ANTIMONY

Antimony is a metalloid element; in its metallic form it is silvery, hard and brittle.

It is alloyed with lead or other metals to improve their hardness and strength. A lead-antimony alloy is used in batteries. Other applications of antimony alloys include type metal (an alloy of lead, tin and antimony in different proportions), bullets and cable sheathing. Antimony compounds are used to make flame-retardant materials, paints and enamels.

For the production of alloys, the 99.5 % and 99.65 % grades are predominantly used.

China produces almost ninety per cent of the world’s antimony. The other major producers are Bolivia, Russia and Tajikistan.
